At present there are only two kinds of elephants in the world: The Asian elephants and the African elephants.

Yesterday I read a circular e-mail from a usually obsessive group that sends me at least 5 conscience-biting e-mails a day - adding to my already existing grief – and I do hope very much that they are assessing their success rate very soon before being perceived as nerve wracking spammers by many, including animal lovers.

After having read the signature-collecting info, I had to do my own search to find a bit of a background to their mentioned subject.

The situation seems to be as follows:

After systematic slaughter of adult elephants in the 8o’s, South Africa banned elephant culling/killing/lynching/ poaching in 1994.

This ban however has been lifted this year.

During these 14 years ban, in order to prevent the increase of the elephant population, there had been attempts to catch and transport some of them to a different location, which of course proved to be very costly, as elephants are not mice and rats to be packed and carried in one plane journey only.

Although I think the elephants could have been persuaded by mice and rats to relocate voluntarily.

Having stated the obvious as my first sentence, it should be also easy to understand that there is no such thing as South African elephants.
They are just African elephants and should be welcomed by all neighbouring countries in
Africa.

Unfortunately in my yesterday’s search I found no organisation – those meant for the protection of elephants - that had an up-to-date news section, let alone one that would make a practical suggestion in order to save the elephants in
South Africa.

So it seems to me that there are at present mainly two groups of elephant lovers:

-One that is usually concerned for their protection but is baffled by the fact that a concentrated group of 20,000 of elephants are causing some disruptions to human lives in South Africa (Are there any comparative studies with the disruptions caused by the refugees who live there as well? it would prove revealing) and prefer to keep quiet about it.

I would call this group the selective elephant lovers.

- The second group are those who are the definitive elephant lovers.

At least as long as there are no elephants around, who would be interested to visit their own allotments for fruit and vegetables.
They can sometimes seem as if they were selective humanists, but they could easily become a part of the first group if they were relocated to
Africa.

I believe with the situation of elephants in
South Africa it has become obvious that no country in Africa can act alone effectively for long, and remain humane when it concerns the protection of the African wild life.

20,000 elephants may be too many for South Africa but it is too little for Africa as a continent - the home to precious and soul enriching animals.

Anyone who kills an elephant does it at the cost of soiling their spirit permanently. From then on that person can kill easily without reminiscence.

My suggestion is as follows:

Look into the elephants’ reactions to other animals and make use of the effect of those animals on elephants to relocate the elephant herds throughout Africa, e.g. trained mice, rats, (shepherd) dogs, wolves etc

However if the South African government prefers to ‘cull’ elephants rather than guiding them on a desired path and helping them to leave the country – and this is where the ivory business comes in – then beware of the following:

These animals have their own instinctive as well as intuitive information gathering and react to ‘culling’ by over activating their need for the survival of their species. This is even more in case of their surviving calves which can indeed be very traumatised by the act of ‘culling’ of the adult family members in their herd or other herds ‘culled’ in considerable distances.*

As a matter of fact I think it likely that the overpopulation of elephants in
South Africa is very much due to the ‘culling’ that took place during the 80’s and early 90’s. With other words a kind of programmed overreaction to the persistent human threat.

So if you are going to be inhuman enough to kill ‘selected’ herd of elephants, then be at least humane enough and refrain from capturing and keeping their calves alive for the maintenance of the ivory supply in the future. Let them go with their family. Let them go.

Many Asians know that having peacock feathers at home is unlucky.

In the meantime until the elephants feel safe or apathetic and reduce their need to reproduce – as in pandas’ case in its extreme – I hereby declare that any newly produced and purchased object made of ivory will bringbad luck’ for the owner.
Just stick to those that are antiques and those you already have at home**.
¡ Basta !

** Exception: If elephants are allowed to die naturally, a dying elephant will walk to a place that can be described as the elephants’ cemetery. If any person happens to get lost and finds her/himself unexpectedly in one of these cemeteries, they can choose one ivory only, for ‘good luck’. This ivory can be carved by the same person only, and kept or given to their loved ones for keep, but cannot be sold or stolen by anyone and retain its acquired special meaning.
