A Sense of Urgency East of Mediterranean

Here I’m not going to waste time on who attacked whom first etc.
It has been done quite frequently for decades with no real desire on both sides for a mutually satisfactory solution to the conflict.
I have already addressed the issue a few years back.
Today I will approach it from the following aspect, namely looking at common points between the Palestinian people living in Gaza and Israel, and the Jewish population of Israel:
1} Naturally after so many years of conflict and pain, both sides are tired of this war, but cannot remember peace.
2} the first Moslems in Medina – hence in general - were the Jewish poorer class who had no difficulty accepting a monotheistic new religion with some kind of promise of change regarding their circumstances at the time.
Obviously the old testament was the source of many rules established in Islam as it had been for the new testament.
Both these aspects did eventually irritate the upper class of Medina.
The class interest is of course easily explainable but the bible influence was more complicated.
If it was today this would be an issue of copyright unless it was of course on the internet, in which case everyone could pick and choose and be one of the many characters in the bible and act in a way that no one on earth would know where they were coming from except those who were acting themselves as another character or were perhaps glued to their computer as the lone audience growing roots under their feet.
But the Jewish orthodox should stop feeling so precious about The Book and see it like this: When your child imitates you it is pleasing and when your neighbour imitates you they want to be your friend – unless they are seriously out of order - so give them a chance.
On the other hand everyone should acknowledge the fact that the Jewish community in Babylon was the only community that had scribes putting the predominantly verbally told stories and myths on the paper. The old testament as we have it today took 400-600 years of creative work by many scribes.
The dilemma of writing or not writing spoken words has been an old one from the time of Socrates and Plato and later perhaps Shams and Rumi who all interestingly lived some part of their lives in Iconium (Konya قنیه}.
But if it was not for Plato or Rumi we would not know much of the way the other two saw the world unless of course we could be one of them and experience it first hand.
When it comes to religious rules the importance of this dilemma becomes more apparent.
As none of the prophets of the 3 major Abrahamian religions – but also many others mentioned in the books – wrote down their view of the world, it is reasonable to conclude that their messages were easily understandable for every one and that they considered it inappropriate for them to be written as scripts.
We know that at least one of them could not read and write, but it is likely that none of them did,. But they could have easily selected a scribe amongst their followers.
The fact that they didn’t, means that they knew their main message for the humanity would survive through the word of mouth as basic truths that would form human psyche through ages.
All other rules related to the issues that were relevant for their time and were short term remedies to help the growth of the communities to the next stage of their mind’s development.
Like Socrates they were not interested in making rules for the future societies, as long as these societies kept in touch with the major messages in service of all. These were principles which are common in all world faiths and humanistic beliefs.
The differences in religions were created by scribes.
It would be reasonable to think that Moses and Jesus could communicate better with each other than the Jewish patriarchs could possibly communicate with Jesus. It is unlikely that they even felt the slightest curiosity to contact him and find out what he was all about and why he was appealing to some people amongst the Jewish communities.
What is real shame is that having written their final version of the old testament they stopped completely to keep record of what happened later. Even if these records would have been condemning, at least many people who doubt the existence of Jesus could know for sure if he was imagined by an angry Jewish writer pretending to be a disciple or was he indeed a historical figure.
Fortunately we are now already in the process of exploring what exactly happens to the human mind and the way it deals with the real as the unreality which could lead to a myth. Is a myth a reality that is missed to be perceived as reality? I have not concluded anything yet, but the process is clear to see for those who are looking at it.
3) Both societies exist in their present forms as a result of rejection.
Israel was created mainly because of the rejection and genocide of Jewish people in Middle and Eastern Europe.
Gaza is created because Palestinians were rejected by the old British Empire and the inexperienced Zionists who did not understand the simple principle that: you do not treat people the way you do not like to be treated.
When I say this to a 5 years old child they understand the logic instantly. What’s going on here with the so called ruling adults? Am I dreaming? What a nightmare.
In order to move forward Israel has to respect the Palestinians and the population of Gaza and do its best for the welfare of a nation treated unfairly and inhumane for so long.
Likewise the Palestinians and the Moslem world must learn to show compassion for a nation that has been traumatised by the experience of their elders through the Nazis. It is probably the constant presence of this memory that has numbed many in Israel.
A kind of blockage and inability to sympathise for people in a worse situation than themselves and a constant justification to be overtly aggressive in reaction to irritations because one has been victim once before and cannot forgive oneself for having been a victim.
And if you don’t forgive yourself for having been a victim you will not forgive other victims either, even when they are victims because of your own lack of Mitgefühl (fellow feeling).
It’s time to heal - for both sides. And they must help each other.
Once the initial peace is agreed this healing process can be through communities’ meetings, group therapies, talking of memories, reflecting and working through them, and building up new positive memories. There is so much potential for love between these two nations. Go for it. Cast the fear aside! Lift the humiliation! Do different!
